(Seattle, WA USA) Greetings from ground-zero of the novel coronavirus in the United States. Epidemiologists expect that a whopping 20 to 60 percent of the world’s adult population could end up contracting this virus. Some good news is that most (~8/10) people who contract COVID-19 will not require medical care. The mortality rate of COVID-19 infection is likely 1-4% of *known* cases. Deaths form COVID-19 are concentrated in the elderly (>60) and in those with underlying medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and those taking immune suppressants.
Symptoms of minor cases of COVD-19 infection are similar to a severe cold or flu and include: fever >101.5, headache, and cough. Severe symptoms indicating the need for urgent medical care include: severe shortness of breath, chest pain, loss of consciousness (or inability to be aroused), blue face/lips.
The main epidemiological problem with this virus is that unlike the flu with an incubation time of ~2 days, this COVID’s incubation time can be as long as 14 days (average ~5 days). This means that asymptomatic carriers can infect others long before they feel sick themselves.
The top priority for all people and governments should be to slow the spread of new infections. Reducing the total number of cases is a real benefit, but the more important goal is to blunt the *spike* in the total number of cases. This must be done to prevent overwhelming healthcare resources like respirators and hospital capacity for those that become critically ill.
The primary tools to blunt the spread of COVID-19 are:
- Simple hygiene: hand washing, covering coughs, sanitizing frequently touched surfaces and objects. Heres my home/office hygiene protocol:
- 1) Everyone washes their hands with soap and water for 20+ seconds right after they arrive.
- 2) Cover coughs & sneezes and keep fingers out of mouths/noses. Any failure to do so leads to a fresh hand-washing. If you can’t stop touching your face, try washing your hands and then handling raw garlic or onion. That ought to help you notice your digits heading toward your cranium.
- 3) For hard surfaces (faucets, doorknobs, light switches, etc.), use a bleach solution spray (4 teaspoons/quart of water), 70%+ alcohol spray, or Windex/ammonia.
- Social isolation: avoiding social gatherings movies, concerts, restaurants, conferences, (even play-dates) and staying >6 feet apart from others).
- Testing: Although still limited and given only on doctors’ orders, rapid and drive-through testing centers will soon be available.
Lifestyle tips to protect yourself and loved ones:
- Sleep: Aim for 7.5-9.0 hours a night. Take melatonin or Mag-threonate as needed.
- Do a 12+ hour fast every day (e.g. 7pm-9am or longer).
- Hydration: Drink 2.0-3.0 liters per day. (that’s 8-12, 8oz glasses of water)
- Movement: Keep your body moving. Aim for 10,000 steps. Do not exercise to exhaustion or extremes.
- Relaxation: pets, walking, sunsets, snuggles, L-theanine lozenges
- Avoid sugar and other empty calories.
- Sunlight: the UV light from the sun is actually quite effective at killing COVID.
